United Nations Transforming Education Summit

GFLEC’S RESEARCH ON THE GLOBAL STAGE: THE UNITED NATIONS TRANSFORMING EDUCATION SUMMIT

“We must bring more attention to how the world can be transformed by elevating financial literacy. It is an essential skill for young people worldwide to have in the twenty-first century,” said Annamaria Lusardi, Founder and Academic Director of the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC), as part of her opening remarks at the United Nations Transforming Education Summit.

Dr. Lusardi spoke about the state of financial literacy around the world and the effectiveness of financial education at a special joint session organized by Aflatoun International and the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development.

At GFLEC, we are excited to join efforts around the world, such as that of Aflatoun International and its more than 300 partners, in making a call to action to elevate education—including financial literacy—to the top of the global political agenda.

At the conclusion of the Transforming Education Summit, the Secretary-General of the United Nations issued a vision statement. We are pleased that financial skills have been included among the set of skills that all young people need in order to overcome the challenges of today's world and to make good decisions for their future.

"Learning to do calls for a focus on a whole new set of skills, including digital literacy, financial skills, and emerging technical and STEM skills. Transformed education systems should develop flexible career management skills, and promote innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship."

Since its launch in 2011, GFLEC has worked to connect research, policy, and solutions. Our presentations at the summit are a testament to our mission and global reach.

Dr. Lusardi’s presentations at the education summit are now available on the GFLEC webpage.
