The P-Fin 8 Index: A Concise Measure of Financial Literacy for Research and Practice

The P-Fin 8 Index is a concise, eight-question measure of financial literacy developed by the TIAA Institute and the Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC). Introduced in 2026 as part of the 10-year anniversary of the P-Fin Index, it provides a short, validated instrument for measuring financial knowledge in both research and practice.

The P-Fin 8 is designed as a compact version of the full 28-question P-Fin Index. It includes one question from each of the eight core domains of personal finance, selected through empirical analysis to closely approximate the full index while reducing survey burden.

The P-Fin 8 Data Tool

Explore the P-Fin 8 Index through an interactive data visualization tool designed to help you examine financial literacy across the U.S.

The tool allows you to:

  • analyze results by total score, question topic, or response type (correct, incorrect, or “don’t know”)
  • compare outcomes across demographic groups, financial well-being categories, and over time
  • customize views using flexible filters and generate visualizations tailored to your needs

All results are based on nationally representative weighted data.
