During Financial Literacy Month, the Financial Literacy Colloquium Series at Stanford University featured a special guest, European Commissioner Mairead McGuinness.

Commissioner McGuinness shared insights about financial literacy initiatives within the European Union.

Ms. McGuinness is the European Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability, and Capital Markets Union. Before joining the Commission in October 2020, she was the First Vice-President of the European Parliament. She served as a Member of the European Parliament from Ireland for 16 years and has been a Vice-President of the Parliament since 2014.

Some of her responsibilities include leading the work on completing the Banking Union, expediting the work on the Capital Markets Union to diversify companies’ sources of finance, and tackling the barriers to the flow of capital. She is also responsible for proposing a FinTech Strategy to support new digital technologies in the European financial system.

The session titled “Why we need to talk about money: Financial literacy in the EU” was held Tuesday, April 16, at Stanford Graduate School of Business.
