Annamaria Lusardi
Annamaria Lusardi is the Denit Trust Chair of Economics and Accountancy at the George Washington University School of Business (GWSB). She is also the founder and academic director of GWSB’s Global Financial Literacy Excellence Center (GFLEC). Previously, she was the Joel Z. and Susan Hyatt Professor of Economics at Dartmouth College, where she taught for twenty years. She has also taught at Princeton University, the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and Columbia Business School. She holds a PhD in Economics from Princeton University and a BA in Economics from Bocconi University.
In over two decades of research on financial literacy, Prof. Lusardi has published more than 90 articles and two books. Her body of research on financial education includes “Financial Literacy and Quantitative Reasoning in the High School and College Classroom,” published by Numeracy; “Financial Education in School: Making it Work,” included in the APEC Guidebook on Financial and Economic Literacy in Basic Education; and “Financial Literacy Skills for the 21th Century: Evidence from PISA,” a Colston Warne Lecture published in the Journal of Consumer Affairs.
Prof. Lusardi is a board member of the Council for Economic Education. She chairs the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Financial Literacy Expert Group as well as the OECD/International Network on Financial Education’s Research Committee. In 2009, she served as a faculty advisor for the Office of Financial Education of the US Treasury. She was a member of the Review Committee that developed the US National Standards for Financial Literacy.
In addition to publishing her academic research, Prof. Lusardi works to disseminate her research results to a broad audience, with the goal of impacting policies and financial education programs. She blogs about her research findings for the Wall Street Journal and Forbes. Her expertise is valued in policy circles, and she was invited by the Subcommittee on Children and Families of the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pension to testify on the lack of financial capability and literacy among the American people and the value of financial education in high school.
Her contribution to the field of financial literacy and education has been recognized numerous times during her more than twenty years of teaching and more than fifteen years researching financial literacy, including the Award for Best Teacher (University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy), First Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Princeton University), William A. Forbes Public Awareness Award (Council for Economic Education), William E. Odom Visionary Leadership Award (Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy), Financial Literacy Award (International Federation of Finance Museums), Ave Tucker Summer Fellow (The George Washington University School of Business), and the Steen Award (National Numeracy Network).
